V\u00fdrazn\u00fd rozmach plastik\u00e1\u0159stv\u00ed a rozs\u00e1hl\u00e9 uplatn\u011bn\u00ed makromolekulov\u00fdch l\u00e1tek prakticky ve v\u0161ech materi\u00e1lov\u00fdch oborech, a tak\u00e9 oblasti b\u011b\u017en\u00e9ho spot\u0159ebn\u00edho zbo\u017e\u00ed, vedly postupn\u011b k nutnosti p\u0159em\u00fd\u0161let o mo\u017enostech jejich uplatn\u011bn\u00ed jako sekund\u00e1rn\u00edch produkt\u016f zejm\u00e9na vzhledem k velmi dlouh\u00e9 \u017eivotnosti i po upot\u0159eben\u00ed. Zp\u016fsoby zpracov\u00e1n\u00ed plastov\u00e9ho odpadu se tak staly ned\u00edlnou sou\u010d\u00e1st\u00ed v\u011bdeck\u00fdch z\u00e1m\u011br\u016f, jejich\u017e c\u00edlem je dos\u00e1hnout minimalizace skl\u00e1dkov\u00e1n\u00ed nebo spalov\u00e1n\u00ed plastov\u00e9ho odpadu, je\u017e zat\u011b\u017euje ve velk\u00e9 m\u00ed\u0159e v\u0161echny sou\u010d\u00e1sti \u017eivotn\u00edho prost\u0159ed\u00ed a ohro\u017euje ekosyst\u00e9my obecn\u011b.   Prim\u00e1rn\u00ed strategi\u00ed odbour\u00e1v\u00e1n\u00ed plastov\u00e9ho odpadu je v sou\u010dasn\u00e9 dob\u011b jejich recyklace, kterou lze prov\u00e1d\u011bt n\u011bkolika specifick\u00fdmi a variabiln\u011b \u00fa\u010dinn\u00fdmi technologiemi. Standardn\u011b jsou rozezn\u00e1v\u00e1ny t\u0159i a\u017e \u010dty\u0159i typy recyklace plast\u016f \u2013 materi\u00e1lovou a mechanickou, surovinovou a chemickou. Materi\u00e1lov\u00e1 recyklace plast\u016f je asi nejzn\u00e1m\u011bj\u0161\u00edm typem, jeliko\u017e t\u00edmto procesem doch\u00e1z\u00ed ke znovuvyu\u017eit\u00ed b\u011b\u017en\u00e9ho plastov\u00e9ho odpadu z dom\u00e1cnost\u00ed, jako jsou PET l\u00e1hve, obaly, n\u00e1doby a kontejnery. Jedn\u00e1 se o technologii, kter\u00e1 je vhodn\u00e1 v\u00fdhradn\u011b pro termoplasty, tedy polymery, kter\u00e9 jsou zpracov\u00e1v\u00e1ny zah\u0159\u00e1t\u00edm, je\u017e v ur\u010dit\u00e9 m\u00ed\u0159e ovliv\u0148uje jejich chemickou strukturu, ale pom\u011brn\u011b uspokojiv\u011b ji zachov\u00e1v\u00e1. Nev\u00fdhodou tohoto p\u0159\u00edstupu je jeho omezen\u00e1 aplikace. Materi\u00e1lovou recyklaci lze pro plastov\u00fd materi\u00e1l pou\u017e\u00edt pouze v limitn\u00edm po\u010dtu cykl\u016f, pot\u00e9 se jako druhotn\u00e1 surovina st\u00e1v\u00e1 neuplatniteln\u00fdm a m\u011bn\u00ed se v ne\u017e\u00e1douc\u00ed plastov\u00fd odpad.  Za materi\u00e1lovou recyklaci je d\u00e1le pova\u017eov\u00e1n mechanick\u00fd proces zpracov\u00e1n\u00ed odpadn\u00edch polymer\u016f, jeho\u017e v\u00fdstupem jsou drt\u011b vyu\u017eiteln\u00e9 obvykle v jin\u00fdch oblastech, ne\u017e byl p\u016fvodn\u00ed c\u00edlov\u00fd trh produkt\u016f. Popsan\u00fdm zp\u016fsobem mohou b\u00fdt recyklov\u00e1ny nap\u0159\u00edklad plastov\u00e9 hra\u010dky z tvrzen\u00fdch polymer\u016f, kter\u00e9 se d\u00e1le uplatn\u00ed jako plnivo kompozit\u016f t\u0159eba ve stavebnictv\u00ed. Surovinov\u00e1 recyklace se vyu\u017e\u00edv\u00e1 u siln\u011b zne\u010di\u0161t\u011bn\u00e9ho polymern\u00edho odpadu, kter\u00fd je p\u0159ev\u00e1\u017en\u011b termick\u00fdmi procesy p\u0159em\u011b\u0148ov\u00e1n na z\u00e1kladn\u00ed v\u00fdchoz\u00ed b\u00e1zi. V\u00fdsledkem jsou sm\u011bsi plynn\u00fdch nebo kapaln\u00fdch uhlovod\u00edk\u016f, je\u017e je mo\u017en\u00e9 d\u00e1le zpracov\u00e1vat na energeticky hodnotn\u00e9 nebo jinak vyu\u017eiteln\u00e9 l\u00e1tky. Jako vysoce potenci\u00e1ln\u00ed a velmi slibn\u00e9 se ov\u0161em aktu\u00e1ln\u011b jev\u00ed mo\u017enosti chemick\u00e9 recyklace polymern\u00edho odpadu. Chemick\u00e1 recyklace je pom\u011brn\u011b nov\u00fd p\u0159\u00edstup, jeho\u017e prost\u0159ednictv\u00edm lze z plast\u016f zp\u011btn\u00fdm zpracov\u00e1n\u00edm z\u00edsk\u00e1vat kvalitn\u00ed chemicky op\u011btovn\u011b uplatniteln\u00e9 suroviny, jako jsou monomery nebo dal\u0161\u00ed aktivn\u00ed slou\u010deniny.
